MCTC Alumni Receive Bush Fellowship for “Circuit Bending” Music

Posted on: June 17th, 2010 by insidemctc 7 Comments

Two MCTC alumni, Bianca Pettis and Jacob Aaron Roske (the conceptual electronic music duo Beatrix*JAR), received a Bush Artist Fellowship on June 14.

Chosen from a competitive field of more than 500 applicants, the St. Paul duo will receive a total of $50,000 in unrestricted funds and professional development support.

Roske (an MCTC Sound Arts program graduate) and Pettis (an alumna of the Video and Digital Arts program) formed Beatrix*JAR in 2004 over a shared attraction to non-traditional musical expression and unique musical instruments. They have traveled extensively spreading the word of D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) electronics and experimentation with conceptual sound art performances and hands-on Circuit Bending workshops. Their innovative and multidisciplinary work has essentially created a successful career-path where there was none before as “circuit-benders.”

Beatrix*JAR has been featured at Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), Wexner Center for the Arts (Columbus, OH), Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, American Visionary Art Museum (Baltimore), High Art Museum (Atlanta) and Hammer Art Museum (Los Angeles). The duo has appeared on public television in Make TV and Think TV.

The Bush Artist Fellowships provide strong and promising artists with resources to deepen and advance their work, to foster their careers as artists and to explore work that stimulates community dialogue. One of the largest artist grants in the Upper Midwest, it is one of only two open-application artist fellowships of this size in the United States. This year’s fellowships focused on visual arts, media arts, and traditional and functional craft arts.
