25th Anniversary of the Twin Cities American Indian Graduation Banquet

Twin Cities American Indian GraduationApril 29, 2011 marked the 25th anniversary of the Twin Cities American Indian Graduation Banquet. This event brings together American Indian students, their families, college officials and indigenous leaders in education from across the state to honor and acknowledge American Indian college graduates. The founders of this event believe that recognizing and celebrating the success of American Indian graduates is one of the ways that educational disparities can be addressed and inspires others to persevere and overcome the achievement gap.

This year’s event was held at the TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus and was attended by over 100 people. Graduates represented numerous tribes from across the country and received degrees ranging from 2-year to Doctorate degrees. The event began and closed with MCTC’s student drum group playing a traditional honor song.

This year, MCTC had the largest number of American Indian graduates in the metro area, with 20 students receiving their degrees. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the American Indian Success Program at MCTC and is testament to their commitment to fostering a supportive and culturally based learning environment where students can succeed.

    It’s great to see your post about the success of these American Indian students. The celebration does help to inspire other students and to help them believe that the dream of a college education can be realized.
