On Jan. 18, approximately 250 members of MCTC’s community gathered at the College for a day of service despite an early morning snowstorm that left several inches of snow on city streets and sidewalks. Participants in the sixth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service attended a breakfast session with speakers including WCCO Reporter Reg Chapman, MCTC Director of Diversity Whitney Harris, MCTC student-led choral group Deliverance for Youth and Northside Achievement Zone CEO Sondra Samuels. Individuals from across the community generously gave their time to the event, including MCTC faculty, staff, students, members of the community and nearly a dozen Target employees.

After a program of rousing music, raw stories and inspirational cheer, participants spread through the community to perform hours of community service at 11 participating sites. Volunteers crafted sandwiches for Simpson Housing Services, repainted a community room at the north Minneapolis Camden branch of People for Pride in Living, sorted donations of clothing and household items for the Arc’s Value Village, Steeple People and Ascension Place thrift stores, made blankets for MCTC’s Resource and Referral Center and more. WCCO covered the event in this article.
