MCTC Theater Department and Student Life Present Spring Play “Top Girls” April 9–12

Top Girls spring play posterDirected by John Townsend, veteran Twin Cities theater critic for the Star Tribune and Lavender Magazine, this play by Caryl Churchill makes a powerful statement about the changing role of women in a society that used to be driven entirely by men.

The play is set in the Big 80s. Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher have hypnotized the world with the concept of “voodoo economics” in which wealth is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands and the scraps “trickle down” to those lucky enough to be where they may land. It’s a time when many women realize they want “a piece of the pie,” but haven’t yet noticed that the game is rigged. Our protagonist Marlene doesn’t care—she will get to the top of the Top Girls Employment Agency no matter the cost.

Amidst her single-minded efforts to rule her company, ghosts from other centuries and from her own past haunt her. Will she yield to their wisdom or will she continue to play the economic and political game?
