Students of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) business club, DECA, participated last week in the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Washington, D.C. The team took second place of 41—second only to a Canadian team—in the Entrepreneurship Challenge competition, securing $1,000 in prize money along with significant bragging rights. The team also advanced to the second round of the Project Management Competition. Competing teams, mostly from four-year universities, came from across the country.
Competition in the conference is intense. The various challenges offer anywhere from 30 minutes to 48 hours to prepare and present a solution to a real-world problem. Participants in these challenges were required to both think on their feet and work through the night preparing proposals. The team’s advisor, Jason Cussler, believes in a hands-off approach. “DECA is supposed to be a student-driven organization. To be honest, I don’t want to mess things up. This group had a relentless work ethic, business savvy and a very real competitive spirit. They wanted to win.”
