MCTC Interim President and Vice President “Sleep Out” with YouthLink

YouthLink sleep outAs the night sky darkened under a rare “super blood moon,” MCTC Interim President Avelino Mills-Novoa and Alberto Day, YouthLink ambassador and MCTC student on hiatus, took this photo (right) at YouthLink’s Night of Hope event September 27.

MCTC Interim Vice President of Student Affairs Patrick Troup and Avelino talked with Alberto at the event, encouraging him to finish his associate degree. Alberto has a dream of finishing his Bachelor of Arts in Social Work at the University of Minnesota – Morris and continuing on to become a social worker.

KSTP’s 5 Eyewitness News Covers Homelessness at MCTC

Joe Mazan of 5 Eyewitness News visited MCTC on November 23 to talk to Mary Ann Prado, director of resource and referral services, and students about the issue of homeless students at the College. It was food and clothing distribution day in the College’s gym–students came to get warm clothes for the winter and food for their Thanksgiving meals, donated by employees and other students. The event marked the last day of MCTC’s Fight to End Hunger and Homelessness activities.

Out of 1061 respondents in a recent student survey, 103 students said they were currently homeless. 163 students said they frequently could not afford a meal or groceries. View the story…

The face of hunger and homelessness may look different than you think. Many MCTC students struggle with hunger and homelessness every day. Out of 1061 student survey respondents, 103 students said they were currently homeless. 163 students said they frequently could not afford a meal or groceries.

MCTC is sponsoring several activities in November to raise awareness and understanding about hunger and homelessness in our community, and to help our students in need. These activities are in recognition of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Nov. 14 – 20. The public is welcome to attend and participate in these activities, Nov. 5 – 23 at MCTC.

This year, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is the week before Thanksgiving to draw attention to the devastating problems of homelessness and hunger in America. Co-sponsored by the National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Student Campaign Against Hunger & Homelessness, events across the country, including at MCTC, promote education, action and awareness about hunger and homelessness.
