Queen Talia Rodriguez and King from Mankato State

MCTC student Talia Rodriguez was crowned queen of the Mr. and Ms. Pan African Talent Celebration during the Pan African Student Leadership Conference at Minnesota State University-Mankato on Feb. 26. MCTC student Major Topps was the third runner-up for the king competition.

The goal of the Pan African Conference is to build student leadership and to provide an opportunity for academic scholars, students, professionals and community members to discuss the issues that affect African people on a local, national and international level.

The culminating event of the Pan African Student Leadership Conference is the Mr. and Ms. Pan African Talent Celebration. It is an opportunity for contestants to demonstrate their leadership skills, talents, creativity and knowledge of their heritage through songs, poetry, dance, drama and other methods of expression. Talia sung a song she wrote and played the guitar. Major played the drums.

MCTC students have been crowned queen three years in a row: Michelle Berry won the crown in 2010 and Cyreta Howard won in 2009.
