Online, Fall 2014

newcourse

Many people from Minnesota probably know someone from Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, or some other countries in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia is a very vibrant region, “crossroads of the world” as scholars often refer to it. This course introduces students to this fascinating region, home to many ethnic groups rich in cultural and religious diversity.  Students will learn about various cultures including, for example, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Indonesian, Filipino, and Malaysian. To obtain a good understanding of its history, students will examine a variety of art forms from different historical periods and religious influences, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Animism (indigenous belief systems). Through readings, visuals and discussions, students will gain some insight into the fundamental values, beliefs, and practices of the peoples of this region, as well as their contributions to and interactions with other Asian and Western regions.

Note: For this course, students only need to purchase one paperback entitled Southeast Asia: Crossroads of the World by Clark D. Neher. They will receive most course materials for free on D2L and through web links.
