MCTC DECA Students Crowned U.S. Champions in Washington DC!

DECA, a student led business club here at MCTC open to all majors, just came back from International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Washington DC as U.S. champions in the Entrepreneurship Challenge competition snagging $1000 in prize money along with significant bragging rights.  The MCTC team came in 2nd place, losing only to a team from Canada, out of 41 teams from mostly 4-year colleges from all around the country.  The team also advanced to the second round of the Project Management event.

 The competitions are intense.  In some competitions, participants are given only 30 minutes to prepare and present a solution to a real world problem.

Graduation Fair and Job Fair- Tuesday, March 25th

The registration page is now live and students can register for the job fair and commencement ceremony. Please, encourage your students to attend the job fair on March 25th as we have quite a few of Business employers attending that day. Some of the employers have accounting opportunities in their business and I hope to get one employer that is just recruiting for accounting. Students are required to select a job fair preparation session to attend the job fair on March 25th. Students have the option of selecting in “Online Prep Workshop” unless they prefer attending a live session. The job fair preparation sessions will help students be prepared to interact and present materials and skills to employers.

MCTC’s Collegiate DECA Team dominated   State Competition on February 26, 2014.  Collegiate DECA is a student driven organization that values competence, innovation, integrity, and teamwork. We prepare students for careers by integrating skills learned in the classroom into real world experiences. Collegiate DECA’s programs and competitive events are clustered around six academic areas; Hospitality and Tourism, Finance and Accounting, Marketing and Sales, Arts, Communication and Technology, and Business Management and Administration. We are proud to announce that Immanuel Jones took First place in Project Management, Elliot Schimming took Second place in Entrepreneurship and as a team Monique Stewart and Elliot Schimming took home First place in Business Ethics. We are proud of our team and will be traveling to     Washington DC on April 22nd – 27th 2014 to represent MCTC at the International Career Development Completion.

Urban Scholars Summer Internship Program!

The City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, Metropolitan Council, and Greater Twin Cities United Way are partnering to host 2014 Urban Scholars. The 12-week leadership development summer internship program is seeking the best and the brightest to learn more about careers in the public sector. Urban Scholars provides:

  • A full-time paid summer internship ($12.24 per hour for undergraduates and $15.75 per hour for graduates) that will provide a high quality resume building work experience.
  • Direct access to agency leaders including but not limited to the Mayor, City Council, Department Heads, Superintendents, and Executive Directors.
  • A team-based community project that will be presented to City Council, community stakeholders, department heads and colleagues.
  • Professional development training from experts in the field.
  • Mentors to provide guidance to achieve professional goals.
  • Opportunities to create valuable professional networks.

This highly competitive leadership development summer internship program starts on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 and ends on Friday, August 15, 2014. Applications will be accepted until Monday, March 3, 2014. This opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate college students regardless of academic major. Public sector experience is highly desired, but not required.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled and in good standing at an accredited two- or four- year college, university, graduate program, or law school.
  • Must have completed first year of post-secondary education.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States
  • Must be able to participate on a full-time basis for 12 weeks (40 hours per week)

All-USA Community College Academic Team

The Student Life department is currently seeking nominees for this year’s All-USA Community College Academic Team. Do you meet the following two criteria?? 

  • Have earned a cumulative college-level GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) for all coursework completed in the last five years (fall 2008-present), regardless of institution attended.
  • By December 31, 2013, will have earned a minimum of 36 semester college-level credits.
