GLOS 1600-01: Southeast Asian Art and Culture

3 Credits (MnTC 6, 8)

Online, Fall 2014

Many people from Minnesota probably know someone from Vietnam, Laos, Philippines, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, or some other countries in Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia is a very vibrant region, “crossroads of the world” as scholars often refer to it. This course introduces students to this fascinating region, home to many ethnic groups rich in cultural and religious diversity.  Students will learn about various cultures including, for example, Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Indonesian, Filipino, and Malaysian. To obtain a good understanding of its history, students will examine a variety of art forms from different historical periods and religious influences, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, and Animism (indigenous belief systems). Through readings, visuals and discussions, students will gain some insight into the fundamental values, beliefs, and practices of the peoples of this region, as well as their contributions to and interactions with other Asian and Western regions.

Note: For this course, students only need to purchase one paperback entitled Southeast Asia: Crossroads of the World by Clark D. Neher. They will receive most course materials for free on D2L and through web links.

For more information, contact the instructor Dr. Wendi Chen at

IF so, and you were hoping to return for SUMMER term 2014- the appeal deadline is Wednesday, April 9th! The deadline for this group of students for Fall 2014 Semester isn’t until Friday, June 27th. You should have already received email communication about this with instructions (so this is just a quick reminder!)

A successful appeal contains an Academic Plan- which is something that I can do for you! For help on this, please set up an appointment with me at the front desk (or call 612-659-6700), or stop by my walk-in advising hours!

FINALLY! An Accounting degree that is more transfer-friendly!

photoThe Business and Accounting department is THRILLED to announce that our NEW A.S. Accounting degree was approved recently by MnSCU, meaning that we will begin to offer this degree in the Fall of 2014 Semester! IF you are currently an A.A.S. Accounting student, and are interested in this new, more transfer-friendly Accounting degree, please make an appointment to come visit me! We can discuss where you’re at in terms of your previously taken courses, find out which ones you have left,  have you fill out the change of major form (which I have to hang on to until the Fall Semester- so it won’t change in your record automatically), and discuss the transfer options/articulations that this new degree contains!

For details on the program requirements, GO HERE to view the newly linked page under the “Major Information” Tab!

Last day to withdraw- tomorrow, November 27th!

Posted on: November 26th, 2013 by Emilie Nimmo No Comments

Reminder- tomorrow, Wednesday, November 27th is the last day to withdraw from courses for Fall 2013 Semester! If you’re very sure you’re not going to pass a class (and you’ve spoken with your instructor regarding your progress), you may want to consider withdrawing from the course instead of receiving a poor grade that will lower your GPA! To do this, you need to log on to your e-services account, choose “courses/registration” and then “view/modify” class schedule.  You will need to click the little “x” on the left hand side of the individual course to withdraw.

If you do withdraw- it will affect your completion rate.  Completion rate is the amount of credits that you attempt (overall) vs. the amount of credits you complete with a passing grade.  If your completion rate gets below 67% you will go on academic warning (one step away from suspension).  If you’re concerned that your completion rate will be low- contact me and I will double check your status!

Summer ACCT and BUSN course offerings!

Posted on: February 15th, 2013 by Emilie Nimmo 4 Comments

It’s time to start thinking about registering for summer courses! As a reminder- summer is a “half” semester, wherein it’s only 8 weeks as compared to the normal 16 weeks of Fall and Spring Semesters.  We do allow students to take up to 10 credits- but I typically recommend no more than 6-8 credits.  You can receive financial aid for this semester IF you have money left over from this past school year.  Once you register for summer courses, the financial aid department will send out a specific summer award letter that will let you know your eligibility.  If you end up not having enough funds, you have time to drop these courses before the semester begins.

These are the course offerings for the ACCT and BUSN specific courses:

ACCT 1215 Accounting Cycle
ACCT 1272 Peachtree
BUSN 1140 Intro to Business
BUSN 1142 Principles of Marketing
BUSN 1154 Business Communications
BUSN 2202 Financial Accounting
BUSN 2252 Principles of Management

Happy Monday Business and Accounting Students! Hope the semester is off to a great start thus far.  I have had a few questions on the following topics lately, wanted to give you a few updates/deadlines in advance!

1. Are you planning on graduating this Spring Semester? IF so, please fill out THIS form, and submit it to the Student Services department (T-2200) by MARCH 1st, 2013!! As always, if you have any questions as to whether or not you’re actually going to be completing your program- please see me immediately!

2. FAFSA for 2013-2014 Academic Year.  Reminder- you must fill out the FAFSA every academic year at  When you fill out the 2013-2014 application, this gives you eligibility for this upcoming Fall Semester.  Don’t wait until the last minute to do this- as soon as you do your taxes from 2012, you are eligible to fill this out!

3. Registration for Summer/Fall Semester.  Registration for this upcoming Summer and Fall Semester will occur at the same time! Registration begins mid-March with the following schedule:

Monday, March 11th– Students who have 50 or more earned credits
Tuesday, March 12th– Students who have 30 or more earned credits

Having trouble finding general education courses to take?

Posted on: November 20th, 2012 by Emilie Nimmo No Comments

Some of you may know this, but for others this tip can be a lifesaver when searching for general education courses that you need to take.  The MNTC Goal Area sheet can be sortof daunting to look at, so you can actually just search an entire goal area when registering.  Here’s how:

1. Go into your e-services account, choose “courses/registration” and “find a course”
2. Choose the “advanced” tab that is next to the “basic” tab that comes up automatically
3. In this list of search options, choose “MN Transfer Curriculum Goal”
4. With this search option, you can put in any of the 1-10 Goal Areas.  I recommend starting with either 5 or 6, as those areas house the most amount of courses

With this search option, you know for sure that the courses that you are finding count towards your “general education” requirement for your degree.  As a reminder- you have until January 18th, 2013 to make your final registration choices (however, classes start on January 14th). Let me know if you have any questions, or please feel free to leave a comment regarding any useful tips that you may have when registering!
